I don’t remember seeing where it was advertised, but when I was rspv’ing I got especially excited when the website presented me the option for a meal (stuffed chicken breast, roast beef or vegetarian). Wow! A 3-course meal totally for free, and it was open to all students. Luckily we managed to rsvp before it filled up.
During the dinner, several guest speakers delivered speeches on indigenous culture awareness – to be frank, the speakers were not very good and the speeches bored me quickly.
Somehow the kitchen manager managed to screw up orders – the vegetarian dish and chicken were mixed up. I ended up with a meager vegetarian plate (which was actually quite good…). One of my friends received his roast beef, which was an absolute disaster. The beef was cooked so rare you needed a master ball to catch it. I caught glimpses of my fellow diners who unfortunately picked beef only to spit it out into their napkin. The dessert served was, again, subpar to say the least: an entire table was only given a plate of cookies and small brownies. Try splitting 3 cookies and 3 dessert squares between 7 hungry people. Each person literally had crumbs.
Perhaps the reason I was so disappointed was because I had such high hopes for it – I imagined limitless supplies of food – my roommate managed to plant the idea of a buffet line in my head as well. Such is the reality of high expectations…
