Every Sunday there is a Christian group that meets for service and dinner. They shamelessly advertise the free dinner provided so I have no qualms taking advantage.
The service runs for an hour and a half and dinner is served immediately after. I usually come right when they are serving dinner, maximizing my personal efficiency. The food is decent – steamed hot dogs, vegetables, chips and chocolates – occasionally they would have chilli and various homemade foods.
The entire time commitment is usually around 30-40min – Despite what I said, arriving right as they are serving food looks quite bad on my part. I sneak in through the back, but often times someone would spot me. Don’t get me wrong, these are very nice people, and I never get called out this.
My first trip to the buffet line I try to load as much as possible. The chilli was no doubt the “king’s crab legs” of the lineup. I piled on 4 more steamed hotdogs, some chips and tuna sandwiches.
My second trip I somehow managed to load up even more. Unfortunately the chilli ran out. I took 3 more weiners, egg salad sandwiches, chips, chocolate brownies and red jellybeans. Whenever I go alone, I would try to eat in solitude and mitigate awkward small talk conversations by browsing my phone. As I am there simply for the food, it is better less people know me by name and face.
Before leaving, I always grab a plate to go. The food line was picked empty by then, I took whatever appetizing leftovers were available (more chocolate brownies, jellybeans, chips and egg salad sandwiches). I would eat on the way home or find a place to eat/study. The drink is unmixed hot chocolate and taste far better than it looks.
