University Welcome Day 3 2014

International Students Welcome

For international students, there was a special welcoming event: Beginning in the morning with food and entertainment through to the afternoon. My roommate and I went in the morning – unfortunately they were checking student IDs and we obviously weren’t on the list.

Later that day, we came back for a second try. Thankfully, security was much more lax. We simply said we were late, and the receptionist waved us in. We helped ourselves to some leftover bagels, muffins and fruit, then promptly left through the back exit.

Part-time Wine and Cheese

I saw flyer advertising for a wine and cheese for part time students. I’m not a part time student. Anyways, I walked into the room a few minutes after the advertised starting time. Immediately I knew it was a mistake: it was a very intimate room, 2 couches and a small coffee table. There were already 6/7 people that all knew each other and engaged in conversation. When I stepped in, they all stopped and looked at me. One lady asked what I was doing here – I told her I was waiting for a friend at the Wine and Cheese. Thankfully they stopped the interrogation there.
I quickly grabbed a plate of crackers and cheese, and a glass of wine. After standing alone awkwardly, I had to pretend to receive a phone call as my exit.

Overall it was a bad experience, I would not have done that again.
