Author Talk: Richard Wagamese
Sometime that afternoon, a special event hosted by the indigenous society at our school featured author Richard Wagamese to speak. The outdoor tent seated around 100 people, mostly alumni and staff, few students. Before the session, food was laid out buffet style. A variety of dips and chips, fruits and yogurt, and desserts were served. I only had the one plate before the event began.
It was really quite interesting. The talk started with a family of native Indians playing traditional music and dance. Then a 12 yr old boy came on stage to perform a traditional hoop dance. Apparently he has been practicing since age 6, starting with 2 hoops. That day, he managed to dance with 15 hoops! Impressive coordination!
Bingo Player Concert
At night, a free outdoor concert was played for the first years. It’s all a part of their orientation. Red Frogs organization set up a tent for attendees, providing water, cotton candy and gummy candy to the ravers (to prevent dehydration/ low blood sugar)
Sleepover Bagels
As a part of welcoming first year students, the off campus society held a sleepover for first year students that commute instead of living on campus. They rented out a gymnasium, pitched tents and set up tables for snacks. Before 11pm, it was open to all students. I went by with my roommate and snacked on some fruits and bagels. They had boxes full of apples and bagels that no one seemed to touch.
I ate 1 bagel there and brought home 2 granola bars.
